Seventh Edition To Open Thursday, September 18th; Festival Runs Through through Sunday, September 21st.
Opening Night for the 2014 edition of Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival promises to be an especially GLEEful occasion. SAUGATUCK CURES, the Opening Night feature film, is making its World Premiere at Cinema Diverse this year, and includes a stellar lead performance by Max Adler (GLEE’s closeted gay bully Dave Karofsky) who recently announced that he will be returning to GLEE for its sixth and final season. Adler, along with the filmmaker and most of the cast, plans to attend the screening.
SAUGATUCK CURES provides a comedic, yet thoughtful take, on topics not often associated with comedy - conversion therapy, religious intolerance, gay marriage, and the ties that both bind and chafe in gay/straight friendships and family relationships. Directed by Cinema Diverse Alum Matthew Ladensack, (2012’s THE APPLE TREE), SAUGATUCK CURES is as much about the relationship between friends Drew (Max Alder - Glee, Switched at Birth) and Brett (Danny Mooney - Ides of March, Whip It), one gay, one straight, as it is about either’s sexual orientation. When the two embark on an ill-conceived trek as bogus conversion therapists to earn money to treat Drew’s ailing Mother, played by "The Young & the Restless” veteran, Judith Chapman, comedy ensues at every turn.
Director (and high school friend) Ladensack initially thought Adler might be reluctant to play the role of Drew. “I had initially offered the part of Brett to Max, who is straight, but Max ultimately asked to play the gay lead. Max has had such an outpouring of praise for his moving portrayal of the tortured Karofsky on GLEE, that he went with his gut rather than fret about being typecast."
