Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Set To Return For Fifth Year with Twice the Number of Screenings.

The Palm Springs Cultural Center announced today that Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival will return for its Fifth Anniversary with twice the number of screenings. “For the last few years, we’ve screened around eleven feature films,” said Michael C. Green, Festival Director. “This year we will have twenty three feature screenings. We will also continue to include a number of short selections paired with the feature films.”

The Fifth Anniversary Edition of Cinema Diverse will take place at Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs. The Festival will open on Thursday, September 20th and continue through Sunday, September 23rd.  Submissions are still being accepted through www.withoutabox.com, and are open through August 10, 2012. “We’ve had a robust number of submissions,” Green continued. “And with the expanded the number of screenings, we expect to be able to both broaden our scope and explore the genre more deeply.”
Some films ha
ve already been selected for this year’s Fifth Anniversary edition of Cinema Diverse, including MELTING AWAY (sponsored by the Desert Film Society). “MELTING AWAY is a powerful Israeli film about a family that falls into crisis after the parents discover that their child is secretly a cross-dresser and kick him out of the house,” Green says. “It’s a bold look at a family dealing with a transgendered child.”

Other films that have already been selected include TAKING A CHANCE ON GOD, a powerful documentary that follows the extraordinary life of 86-year-old Jesuit priest John McNeill, the co-founder of Dignity NY, and author of the revolutionary “The Church and the Homosexual” which the Catholic Church first allowed to be published and later banned, and FACING MIRRORS, a remarkable Iranian film that tells the story of an unlikely and daring friendship that develops between Rana, a traditional Iranian wife and mother, and Adineh (Eddie), a rebellious transgendered woman who is anxious to get female-to-male sex-reassignment surgery.

“In addition to what is shaping up to be a truly exciting selection of feature films, we also have a diverse selection of shorts to share with our audiences.” Green says. “This is definitely a great year for LGBT cinema. We’re thrilled to be able to bring these films to our local audience.”
